Michigan – Detroit Based Filmmaker Launches New Production Studio to Develop Television

Electric Marshmallow Productions aims to make high quality content with exceptional performances.

Screenwriter Ashtyn Law, a Michigan native originally from Flint, has spent the better part of the last three years extensively writing, developing, and workshopping television.

"It all started when we began a year-long study into representation on television. Watching so much television made it clear what was missing and how television could be made," the 47-year-old said.

We are Ashtyn and longtime collaborator, director, Dom Evans. Evans has a degree in film and studied representation, particularly disability and LGBTQIA while there. In 2014, the trans disabled activist combined his two jobs when he created the hashtag #FilmDis, a chat on disability and media that went viral on Twitter. In 2018, the two started an informal media monitoring group known as FilmDis. Since then, the two have released three studies and papers into disability representation on television.

"We’d created all of these ideas and put them in folders over the years. But with all the other work we were doing, we did not have time to really write scripts even though creating television is really what we wanted to be doing," Evans revealed.

"Then one day I just opened one of the folders and started developing an outline. That was for our slice of life drama, The Park. After that, I outlined another pilot, a sci-fi drama, Space Pirates, and it went from there."

"We now have 20 pilots," Ashtyn added, "I write every single day, and I have written something every day for the last few years."

The two have gotten great feedback from screenwriting competitions. One competition, B!tchfest, even placed two of their scripts as finalists. The Lu was in the top seven finalists for best pilot, while The Lost Girls placed in the semifinals for best first-time screenwriter. Both The Park and Space Pirates have placed in multiple contests, as has another pilot script, Tracy.

In Dec 2024, Evans directed a table reading of Space Pirates with some well-known names. Actors are drawn to their work. Evans was praised for his calm nature, clear vision, and keen eye while directing, while Law is consistently praised for her writing, especially her dialogue and her development of women and other non-male characters

Together, the duo hopes to shake up Hollywood, something that needs to happen to the struggling industry.

Law is certain that their work will resonate with viewers, "Audiences want to be entertained, but more than that they want to be seen. I’m from one of the most visible demographics on TV, but I can count on one hand the times I've felt represented. So, that's our goal and it's one that resonates with audiences. We are what television needs."
